It annoyed me because we had no coverage and no data at all for the entire chase! Back to the old days! The first cells struggled whilst we looked at the cells on th Kansas border. A lot of pressure to head up north but we remained on our target. The issue was that the anvils were raining on the updraft air for the first and then second and finally the third storm which favoured a left moving environment. In the distance to the WSW was the struggling cells with structure we liked. So took the gamble and headed towards it.Just NE of Arnett. we had to turn south to escape the hail. I did not realise whilst driving at the time, but our photos showed the split! Nevertheless, our target was always going to be the southern structure. We stopped E of Arnett and filmed the storm with possible wall cloud and beaver tail and it was this time the storm first weakened into a linear structure. We headed east and photographed the storm periodically. The southern section improved and we spent the next 4 hours side stepping the anvil rain south east all the way to Clinton and Weatherford. It exhibited the best structure near Highway 34 north of the intersection with 33 (Leedey). It was here I photographed the vault and thankfully we could remain east to east southeast of the storm. It was one incredible chase and he structure awesome!

Supercells and rotation Oklahoma 17th April 2013

Michael and I chased from Vernon to SW Oklahoma and intercepted supercells – some with moderate to strong rotation. One mesocyclone almost produced a tornado some distance west of Lawton. The structure on these supercells was very nice HP with inflow and beaver tails.

We dropped to the last supercell west of Granfield, Oklahoma with a beast tail end Charlie discrete supercell moving east. The inflow was very strong and a tornado was reported. We did not visually see the tornado but we are looking at suspect photographs that show possible lowerings and matching times.

Spectular Supercells NW Texas 15th April 2013

What an incredible day on what was meant to be a marginal day!

We got onto the supercells out there today.0415jd023 0415jd042 0415jd044 0415jd088 0415jd095 0415jd098 We missed perhaps the first severe storm which was dying by the time we got to it with last bit of inflow. The second storm cranked up and produced rotation but it eventually became linear, so we let it go. The third storm was in between this and tail-end charlie though it produced some high based cow catcher formation and then died rather quickly when the tail end supercell cranked up and produced a nice beaver tail and likely wall cloud. In fact I filmed rotating scud below and disconnected to the base which then gradually connected and became this possible wall cloud. I don’t think I have seen this occurring I guess we are usually seeing invisible action. This was obviously the interaction with the RFD and the inflow. This storm also had mostly easterly winds! But it never produced a tornado – too high based but it ended up being a beautiful wedding cake structured LP. Nice day!

Hailstorm central Oklahoma 14th April 2013

0414jd07 0414jd34 0414jd35 0414jd55Intercepted the storm in Central Oklahoma which produced hail to about 2.5cm or so further east and copious amounts of hail in some areas though not drifts - the storm was moving rapidly. We did well it even keep in contact at some stages.

This was a very bright rainbow!

Waterspouts spotted of the Central Coast 9th April 2013

Screen Shot 2013-04-09 at 10.47.11 PMWaterspouts were spotted off Newcastle and Central Coast this afternoon spawning a severe thunderstorm warning for winds. The main concerns were that strong winds associated with the waterspouts making landfall may cause localised damage as well as become life threatening in nature.

Storms Western Sydney 7th of April 2013

Storms formed around Campbeltown this afternoon and tracked north Towards Penrith and St Marys. One of these cells intensified with a strong radar return or two before breaking down rapidly. Before it broke down though it produced a very well defined funnel cloud. At first I though the lowered areas were just scud but it appears some decent interaction as going on as a funnel appeared rapidly and I was even able to see it condensate before my eyes!

Tornadoes expected in Texas 7th, 8th and 9th April 2013

Models are in agreement for a potential outbreak of tornadoes particularly on Monday and Tuesday across the states of Texas and Louisiana. The latter period also has the potential for a squall line to follow as this system winds up. Rich Gulf of Mexico moisture may be ejected into the developing system as it amplifies. Soundings in this region shows decent hodographs and with an upper trough in place, the development of discrete supercells are likely. Stay tuned for some action across this region.

Tornadoes hit Texas April 1st 2013

The Texas panhandle experienced its first spring tornadoes of 2013 as an upper level system spun up through the Rockies. Located on the western frigne of the region known as Tornado Alley, this region is no stranger to tornadoes particularly during the period April to June.

The region affected was on the edge of the caprock near Silverton Texas in the southern part of the Texas panhandle.
